Peet's booming voice welcomed us before we physically saw him from behind my dusty, tired car and three sweaty children.

His wife, Hanna, wasn't far behind and they embody the spirit of their working farm - ease, beauty, care, comfort. A nurturing place that feels less like a stopover, and more like an enticement to stay for a much longer time, next time.

The farm is a curious mixture of koppie and bush, blended into the foreground of an old farm house that has everything one can ask for from a house that isn't one's own, including a very old piano. Comfortable without flashiness, spacious without making one feel lost, and warm without trying too hard.

The rooms are clean and aesthetically pleasing, the self-catering kitchen and dining room are big enough to house a small army of family and friends. The swimming pool at the bottom of the steps kept the children busy for hours, and everywhere, trees and aloes and roses. This place made us very, very happy. We'll return, that's a promise."

"We spent only two nights at Doornberg, and we were blown away by the farm. We were given a whole house to ourselves, very well equipped and spacious. The accommodation is serviced every morning. We had a delightful braai in the back yard on our first evening, and watched a breathtaking sunset over the far horizon from the front step. The owners provided the firewood, and swimming towels for their pool. The farm is an oasis of greenery, and we were enchanted by the paradise flycatchers flitting in and out of the trees outside our windows.
Doornberg is less than 10km from the pretty town of Nieu Bethesda. We visited the town, spending time at the Owl House, looking at fossils, seeing the town on a donkey cart tour, and simply enjoying walking around the picturesque village. There are plenty of places to eat - we visited the brewery, tasting excellent craft beer and cider, and then spent New Year's Eve at the Karoo Lamb. Our hosts at Doornberg gave us plenty of information about things to do and places to eat - but it was always good to return to the peace and comfort of this beautiful farm."
