"Sandflats Winters Cottage"

(South Africa) Karynsa Lamprey

"Home away from home. If you like your privacy and prefer to do it yourself, this is perfect. We booked for easy access to Addo Elephant National Park, short distance for exploring Grahamstown, Bathurst, Port Alfred and Port Elizabeth. Definitely would stay there again."

"Spent a night on our way from Jhb to the Garden route. They are conveniently just off the main road. Our room was self catering and slept 4 on single beds in an open bedroom/ living room. The building is old and in need of some Tlc, but was clean and was all we needed. It was freezing cold and the bathroom is a long way from the beds which aren't very comfortable. If you are on a tight budget and aren't looking for luxury this could be an ideal base to explore Addo."

"We really enjoyed our experience at Sandflats. The hosts were friendly and gave us information on places to visit in the area as well as for the rest of our trip. It is definitely a great place to stay when wanting to visit Addo Elephant Park. Winters cottage is the perfect family place as there is room for the children to get rid of their endless amounts of energy. Thank you Sandflats for making our holiday memorable."

"Great - a bygone era"

(Netherlands) R Tammer

"We stayed four nights in the Winter's cottage. The whole atmosphere was indeed as if we were back in time. We could feel the place used to be a town centre along the railroad track. It was as if nothing had changed since then, and that includes the accomodation itself. We went to Addo, Jefrey's Bay,..."

"We stayed four nights in the Winter's cottage. The whole atmosphere was indeed as if we were back in time. We could feel the place used to be a town centre along the railroad track. It was as if nothing had changed since then, and that includes the accomodation itself. We went to Addo, Jefrey's Bay, the Zuurberg Pass, and did the Schotia game drive, which was worth every penny. "This was our second stay at Sandflats bed & breakfast and we really felt at home there. It is quite close to the shop and while we were there we took a drive down the road to the Addo Elephant Game Reserve which is just that, down the road! There is a bar on the property where we sat at an open fire and had tea with Denise, the owner, as it was a very cold night, it was very cosy.

While we were there our vehicle was securely parked in a lockup garage at no extra charge, wow where do u get that at most bed & breakfast lodgers?

There are also braai places and a pool and a lounge were you can watch DSTV, great for us as we have travelled quite a lot and not all the places we stayed at had DSTV or any TV as a matter of fact. Thank you to Rudy and Denise Wilhelmi (owners) for the lovely stay, we definitely will stay there again when on our travels through the Eastern Cape."

Rudy and Denise have done a super job renovating it while retaining its unique character - comfy furniture, museum-quality antiques in the breakfast room, and the shiny dark green cement "stoep"! The forest green and cream colour scheme of the surrounding buildings has also smartened up the whole Sandflats village. Friendly service and good value for money. Thanks - I hope to be back some time. "

"Denise made us most welcome on arrival and we enjoyed relaxing with a cold drink in the newly decorated bar, where later in the evening interesting conversations with local customers was entertainment in itself and yielded useful information about the local places of interest, game parks and especially the Addo Elephant Reserve.

Our large veranda room opened onto a large paved central square overhung by busy nesting Cape Weaver birds, was ensuite, a room with bath an option but our preference the shower. What a comfortable bed, and all the usual, kettle, tea, coffee and toiletries on hand. Everything spotless throughout, with a wealth of interesting artifacts dating back to a bygone era in the lounge and dining room. Breakfast was simple to sumptuous, whatever suited individual taste, personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the 'Full English' and several cups of filter coffee. Many establishments I find fall or fail at that hurdle, the importance of good coffee.

Leaving in the morning, we determined to return for a longer stay in the future, for the excellent hospitality offered by Denise and Rudi and to use Sandflats as a base to explore more of this area of the Eastern Province."
