Draaihoek offers West Coast peace, space, and serenity. The thatched lodges seem brand new, are very clean, have a lovely firepace (I just added the pre-cut pieces of blitz provided to the pre-built fire and lit!), and far-away-from-it-all ambience.

I loved going to sleep to the loud sounds of the sea crashing just over the dunes.

Draaihoek is lovely for kids. Totally safe, I know the kids will just run wild - I'm looking forward to returning with them. There's a heated pool too and lots of grassy play areas.

The lodge also serves food and it is damn fine fare, especially the lemon meringue!

Our hosts and the staff just couldn't do enough for us. The drive up from Cape Town was well worth the effort. Arriving on New Year's Day to a clear blue sky, a pristine (empty, except for us!) powder white sand beach as far as the eye could see, to be greeted with a welcome drink of excellent SA bubbly (I could kick myself for not asking what it was!) - what a way to start the New Year. The best was yet to come - the fabulous sunset, the stars, and a gemsbok fillet for dinner I which was so tender I could cut it with a feather!

The place seems well off the beaten track and is in the middle of nature but is really a click off the R27. It's part gravel to Lambert Bay where we indulged in crayfish (as one does there), but there are no big potholes or anything to impede the journey (about 3/4 hour) in a 'normal' car.
