It was clean, the beds were comfortable, water hot, and towels pristine white. My husband enjoyed the mulberries in the garden. As the owner no longer offers meals we went to Jenny Street's home restaurant for a wonderful relaxed meal. A reasonable price and something different."

"As a family we have overnighter twice at Groenhuis Guesthouse over the past year and cannot recommend it highly enough. From the moment of arrival in this quaint town, and on meeting Jens the owner, one is struck by the tremendous sense of hospitality and warmth. Jens is friendly and engaging, and a mine of information about the town and area, should one be interested. The accommodation is clean, very comfortable and tasteful. We have stayed at any number of other establishments on the Cape Town - Johannesburg route over the last few years, and Groenhuis ranks as easily the most pleasant, aesthetically pleasing and reasonably-priced that we have experienced. It is an oasis on a long Karoo journey."

"We spent one night at the Groenhuis and found it very interesting. The house we stayed in was neat and well kept taking into consideration that it is more than a hundred years old! It was also interesting to learn about the town of Philippolis and the old houses from the owner who really did everything to make us feel at home. It was a good decision on our part to have booked there for the night and it would have been better still if breakfast could be provided.

"Having not travelled through Phillipolis for many years we were rather anxious as to what we may find in this tiny backwater which had virtually disappeared off the map due to the N1 diversion from Colesburg to Bloemfontein.
Notwithstanding a rather cautious journey due to potholes for about 50 kilometers, we found Phillipolis right where we had left it some 30 years previous.
The tiny town boasts a few guest houses and B&Bs and naturally we were a bit concerned as to what we would find.
The Greenhouse Guest House is situated off the beaten track just on the edge of town, and is meticulously maintained by Jens Friis who greets you enthusiastically and regales you with a potted pen picture of the history of Phillipolis.
The room that we had booked was part of a small house with two other en-suite rooms and a common lounge area sporting a microwave, fridge and cooker and was furnished in delightful "boere kitch" furniture reminiscent of a bygone farming era that once thrived in this district.
On arrival Jens told us that the accommodation although old was impeccably clean, and this was indeed the case. Tastefully furnished en-suite room with airconditioning awaited us and we were grateful to just sit around and soak in the peace and tranquility of the surroundings after 8 hours on a long road from the Cape.
We highly recommend a stay over at the Greenhouse, and besides for a short detour of about 50 kilometers, where can you find such friendly clean and hospitable accommodation for R200 per person.
We will certainly be back."

"Charming and Relaxing."

(South Africa) Michelle Scheepers

"An absolutely stunning guest house, I could not have asked for better. We did not want to leave when the time came to go. It is the place to stay over in Philippolis!
