"Riders Rest B&B situated as you come into Port Alfred and near shops, restaurants and small boat harbour area. The Riders Rest B&B invites you in with friendly staff and an almost rustic rough and antique decor. The area outside the room is fitted with an outside lounge suite to relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility of the surrounding garden and Port Alfred itself.

The room which is fitted with a full en suite bathroom with a combination of serene cool white and rustic decor providing with a pillow propped double bed, fridge, TV, cupboards, fan and heater if necessary.

Breakfast was out of this world for me with a choice of yoghurt, various cereals, bread/toast, and a cooked breakfast of eggs, tomato, sausage, bacon and mushrooms. and of course filter coffee. Well worth it. Wish we had been able to stay for a longer period. Definitely a next time."

"Pleasant Stay"

"The room and setting were super, Margie is lovely and we had a super chat with her!
The only thing we found is that our room was close to the kitchen/dining room so there was no chance of sleeping late, once breakfast was being made! This was a minor issue and we would not hesitate to return! more

"This is a homely establishment that warmly embraces you! Rooms are tastefully furnished and comfortable. Breakfast was served by a friendly hostess who accommodated our personal preferences, both of time and content, with a smile. It works really well if you are a party comprising 2 or 3 couples - we were 2 couples - as the 3 downstairs suites are in fairly close proximity to one another; but there were other guests and we did not feel our privacy intruded upon. We enjoyed the use of a comfortable porch where we could enjoy breakfast, as well as doing our own lunches and even dinners-a little chilly though, if the wind is blowing. This is excellent value in its price range.

"Truly fantastic"

(South Africa) Roxanne Long

"Warm, inviting, welcoming, friendly, relaxed, clean, comfortable, beautiful, quirky, reasonable, surprising, elegant, eclectic and a host of other adjectives only come close to describing our stay at this establishment!
Thank you to all at Rider's Rest, we will be seeing you again."

Estelle made sure that we had everything we needed before retiring to bed. We had a well cooked hearty breakfast and interesting conversation with Estelle, everything in her house has a story. By the time we left the most delightful Riders Rest, I knew I had made a very special friend. My husband and I would be more than happy to stay there again on our next visit to Port Alfred. "

"We spent 2 nights at Rider's Rest B&B and thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Our welcome from, and further interaction with the owner, Estelle Kloppers, was very friendly and she was extremely accommodating on all fronts. We particularly appreciated being able to house our car in the garage. The fantastic full breakfast set us up for the day. Our double room with bath and separate shower was very comfortable with a french door opening onto a screened verandah with table, chairs, magazines and a comfortable sofa. The furnishings are rustic with lots of interesting knick-knacks and decorations. Very useful was the bar fridge in the room. There is no extended view but the small, secure, enclosed garden is adequate. I especially loved the small aviary with a variety of birds, including a number of quails, one sitting on eggs. The dogs and cats were also a welcome homely touch! The walk to the beach took about 5 minutes. We would certainly Rest at Rider's again! "

"Quaint and unusual"

(South Africa) Mrs Kathy Smith

"What a pleasure to be welcomed into the very unusual and well kept home of Estelle and Gus. Estelle cooked and served our breakfast personally, and it was a really large breakfast. The setting is tranquil, rustic and so peaceful. Really to be recommended."

Lovely place, champion breakfast and gracious hostess. Will definitely be back in future and will recommend to all my friends."

How wonderful it was to be welcomed to Riders Rest by the vivacious and friendly Estelle! Her favourite saying was "Happy days", but unfortunately for us it was only one happy day.

The room was great. I enjoyed the peace and tranquillity of reading my book until late on the verandah, and after a peaceful and refreshing sleep I enjoyed coffee in the garden early the next morning. We then relaxed in the dining area and chatting to Estelle while she prepared our breakfast, which was great. I can recommend Riders Rest and will certainly stay over in future."

"What a treat"

(South Africa) Mrs Rhodes

"I loved every minute of my brief stay at this delightful, quirky establishment. Estelle has put so much of her own delightful personality into this place. I cannot think of anything that would have improved my stay...and the deep "Victorian" style bath was a bonus."

"I have stayed in many B&B's over the past few years and this is the best so far. My family had a wonderful 3 days at Rider's Rest. Estelle went out of her way to indulge us and we could not have asked for better hospitality. The breakfasts were delicious and the cosy kitchen and braai area were available for "self catering" so we did not have to eat out for other meals. It was really great and we hope to be able to enjoy this lovely B& B again.

PS. The dogs are charming.

"We rang the bell at 14 Beach Crecent,
Which opened a world to us most pleasant.
We were met by a woman of extraordinary appeal,
Who showed us our room and enquired about meals.
Feeling at home we hauled in the bags
Then settled on the stoep for a few chin wags.
We found ourselves surrounded by a gentle calm,
Not to mention tasteful luxury and country charm.
The careful attention of our dear hostess
Left us feeling like a grand Duke and Duchess.
Before we could mouth them, our requests were filled
And any praises we offered were quickly stilled.
We travelled far and wide to source the best,
And found what we were looking for in Rider’s Rest.

Our experience at Rider’s Rest was truly five-star. Not only was the accommodation superb in terms of comfort and privacy, but our hostess, Estelle, went out of her way to ensure that we had everything we needed. When we decided to braai one evening, she ensured that we had braai wood, tongs, matches, firelighters … you name it, and even prepared three braai areas for us to use in case we found the one too windy, or didn’t like the view of the other. She was so concerned about our enjoyment and comfort that she provided an umbrella in case the darkening sky decided to spit while we were braaing.

We can honestly say that out of all the accommodation we stayed in during the month that we were on holiday, Rider’s Rest is the one that stands out in our memories because it was there that we felt at peace … we felt at home.

"As we drove from our home in Port Elizabeth, to Rider's Rest in Port Alfred on 26 December 2009, we did not know what to expect. My husband just wanted to surprise me for my birthday and what a surprise it was. He did not inform the staff of Rider's Rest that it was my birthday, but they sure did make it special, without knowing. I will always remember our experience at Rider's Rest.

Our very first taste of the friendly and open staff and atmosphere, was a call we had to make to Estelle, the manager. We were lost in Port Alfred and phoned on her cell phone. She stayed on the phone with us and directed us. It was so easy and we felt so safe, not worried at all. When we arrived, Estelle was at the gate to great us with a beautiful, open smile.

As we're only married for 5 months, it felt like we're on honeymoon.
Our room was beautiful. The setting in the garden and in the passage, was absolutely beautiful with a piece of art from all over Africa. My husband being from Malawi, we immediately knew, Estelle must have travelled a lot.

We had an opportunity to compliment her on the beautiful setting and that's when we learned she travelled around in Africa, mostly, Zimbabwe.
Estelle actually stopped with her work and engaged in a warm conversation with us.

I would recommend Rider's Rest to anyone. Our entire family and friends already knows, if you want to experience Africa, 5-star treatment, friendliness, cleanliness and warmth, Rider's Rest is the place to visit."

"Home"

(South Africa) Ms Dalasile

"Two day get-away"

(South Africa) Mrs Wampach

"Enjoyed our stay, B&B beautifully decorated, very relaxed atmosphere, spotlessly clean. Comfortable extra length bed. Filter coffee with breakfast would have completed the experience. Would definitely go back."
