"On arriving here we didn't think much as the 'dirt track' reminded us of being on safari again!! However, once Archie opened the front doors, there was definitely a WOW factor to this place. We were shown to the bar area where we were given a glass of homemade lemonade while we checked in and our bags brought to our room. Once we were shown to our spectacular room (which had an outdoor shower, a wet room style bathroom and a 4 poster bed), we had some time to laze in the hammock on our balcony and drink in the views of the valley before our arranged drive to Addo Elephant Park (which was fantastic). We decided to have dinner at the lodge, cooked by Archie's wife, at a cost of R220 pp. Food and service was fantastic but expensive compared to what we had paid in other restaurants in SA. Sitting on the huge veranda after dinner sipping wine was very relaxing and romantic.

Although this place had everything we wanted and hoped for, the extras such as minibar, wine from the wine cellar and the honesty bar, were expensive in comparison to all of the other places we stayed.

Overall, a great experience, highly recommended but pricey in comparison!! "

If you are into food and wine, you definitely have to make this one of your stops! As we were traveling in the middle of winter, we were the only guests there that night, but they still prepared and served a full dinner for us! A terrific wine cellar. Very comfortable and spacious suite, with a nice large bed, and a wonderful bathroom, including an outdoor shower with a view of the entire valley and countryside below. It feels like you are driving to the middle of nowhere, but it's worth it. They also hooked us up with a wonderful guide to drive us through the Addo Elephant Park, and she was terrific. We had just done 6 days of safaris in Botswana, but this was still wonderful to do and really added to what we had already seen and experienced."

Archie and his staff are lovely and really can't do enough for you, the food is lovely, something that you would expect from a city restaurant, and the wine cellar needs to be seen to be believed.

From the complimentary drink on arrival, breakfast, a walk round their private reserve to dinner and a very relaxing evening its all completely unforgettable. We were very reluctant to leave and hope to return as soon as possible."

"Hitgeheim Country Lodge is one of the best hotels (if you can call this a hotel) we have stayed in, that's for sure. It is situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere near Addo Elephant Park (the park is close enough though) on a huge piece of land shared with Zebras, many kinds of Antilope, birds..."

"Hitgeheim Country Lodge is one of the best hotels (if you can call this a hotel) we have stayed in, that's for sure. It is situated pretty much in the middle of nowhere near Addo Elephant Park (the park is close enough though) on a huge piece of land shared with Zebras, many kinds of Antilope, birds etc. It is such a peaceful place and the lodge is managed perfectly by very friendly and extremely professional staff. Archie (the owner) is really nice and always happy to recommend what to do and his wife is a great chef who prepares delicious menus in the enclosed restaurant. It is highly recommended to have dinner at Hitgeheim for several reasons: the food and wine is great (good value too), you sit on a terrace looking onto a valley (wonderful view) and the next restaurant is about 8 km away, while you have to go there partly on dirtroads. The rooms are spacious with very tasteful decoration and the bathroom is huge with an indoor and an outdoor shower plus bath tub with a great view on the valley - really wonderful! There is also a great terrace for sundowner drinks and a small pool with sun beds. I would recommend this lodge for honeymooners, older couples and anyone who values excellent hospitality and very tasteful decoration. The lodge is probably not so well-suited for people with children."

"After leaving Durban early on Monday morning the 26th of May 2008, our plan was to stay for two nights at Hitgeheim Country Lodge. It was a long drive, and arrived when it was already dark. Although we were running late, someone (Ronel) was waiting for us at the entrance, helping us with our luggage..."

"After leaving Durban early on Monday morning the 26th of May 2008, our plan was to stay for two nights at Hitgeheim Country Lodge. It was a long drive, and arrived when it was already dark. Although we were running late, someone (Ronel) was waiting for us at the entrance, helping us with our luggage and escorting us to our room. What a beautiful room! Because of the long drive, we declined having supper, as we were heading straight to bed. 5 minutes later there was a knock on the door, free bottle of wine and a lovely cheese platter!
The next morning the view was spectacular, especially while using the outside shower. Breakfast was amazing, with friendly and professional service like you won't believe. Right there we booked for supper.
That evening we were treated like royalty, having sundowners on the deck, and then moving into the restaurant, where we enjoyed a gourmet 5 course meal, the best we ever had.
After breakfast the next morning, we actually felt sad to leave behind this lovely place, but with the knowledge that we will definitely return one day."
