"This was our second visit to Cheval Vapeur and we were pleasantly surprised to see that it was in much better shape than the first time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and it was actually a pity we didn't stay longer.

The owners are very helpful and always ready for a chat. They were also available late at night with any concerns we had.

I can recommend Cheval Vapeur for an experience different to the norm. Despite it not being located in one of the more 'tourist friendly' areas of the Cape, we never once felt unsafe. Not during our stay, and not during the trips there and back. It is within 20 minutes or so of most popular tourist attractions.

We will definitely consider staying here again on future visits."

"Beautiful Place"

Lynne Morland

"Went as a family, myself, my husband and our 16 month old. It was so relaxing and peaceful, loved being surround by nature. The cabins were well equipped for our needs. The hosts Colleen and John made us feel so welcome. We will definitely be back."

"Perfection "

Shanice Adams

Enjoyed our stay.
Will definitely go back.
Thank you for everything!"

"Quietness"

"Tranquil & great value for money "

Jane Pitt

"John and Colleen have created a gem to escape to. The cottage had everything I needed, staff were friendly and accommodating and the horses beyond serene and beautiful.

I was ideally placed to attend my necessary meetings and will definitely be returning. "

"Rustic farm setting"

"We knew going there that a horse farm would be a farm complete with dogs and horses and associated sights and smells. the cottage we stayed in was sufficient for our needs and the amenities suited us well. we were happy there was both a fridge and stove top to have and prepare meals. the fridge froze our liquids unfortunately. The door rattled a lot when the wind was howling outside. Beds and chairs were comfortable and space was enough. the whole place could probably do with more upkeep, but being not the main business of the property allowances are made.

Establishment Response:

Provided in every cottage: Microwave, Mini-Oven, Fridge, Kettle, Toaster, Fry Pans, Pots, Mugs, Plates, Bowls, Cutlery, Complimentary Biscuits, Salt & Pepper, Coffee , Tea, Sugar, Toilet Paper and Soap, Beds, Rugs, Heater, table & chairs, mats and mirrors. The Fridges do have temperature settings which can be adjusted by the guests themselves, for different requirements . Doors do tend to rattle when wind and South-Easters howl in Cape Town . I apologise for that.

The Cheval project objectives are Job Creation (essentially for the indigent), Wetland Restoration and Horse Rehabilitation and Rescue and Getaway Accommodation. After clearing the site of dumping, ongoing development including boreholes, roads and landscaping . we have attracted the return and nesting of many of the wetland birds+/- 50 in the last 5yrs.

For those needing more Mews Apartment is available. I am sorry our efforts did not met the

guestÕs expectations."

"Family of four"

Almost walked away from it the first time we got there, but in the end happy that we stayed for the 4 nights. Just for the experience.

Something totally different that what we are used to.

I would say it's worth a shot just for the uniqueness, but doubt if we will return.

We have been to other 'rustic' venues which are in much better shape than this. I think the owners are struggling to keep a hand on the property.

Establishment Response:

As per our listing details, Cheval Vapeur is situated in the seasonal wetlands (Agricultural

Philippi-see map) and is a Horse Farm. I do not know what experience the guest was hoping

for but we are exactly what we say we are.

The Cheval project objectives are Job Creation (essentially for the indigent), Wetland

Restoration and Horse Rehabilitation and Rescue and Getaway Accommodation.

After clearing the site of all products of dumping, ongoing development including boreholes, roads and landscaping . we have attracted the return and nesting of many of the wetland birds,+/- 50 in the last 5 years.A more luxurious Mews Apartment for those needing more. DSTV, Antique Brass Beds, private bath & shower etc and also fully equipped, at a higher

rate, is available. I am sorry our efforts did not met the guestÕs expectations"

"Weekend was too short"

(South Africa) Carmelitha

"We had an awesome time at Cheval Vapeur, and have already made plans to go back and stay for a whole week.

It's clean, comfortable and best of all very cheap compared to other self catering accommodation spots.

We felt at home and John was very friendly and accommodating. "

""Shared" "

"Accommodation is fair.
The owners need to elaborate on "shared" bathroom.
By "shared" it means that you need to walk quite a distance to the toilets in the dark a night and a further 200 metres to the communal shower.
That's my gripe for now - otherwise very quaint and rustic.

If we needed anything to be fixed or just assistance John would be there to help right away. We so grateful.
Since my brother loves horses and have one of his own Colleen arranged with Bonte to show him the ropes in handling his horse and gave us additional information on to help him out which needs to returned on our next visit.
The dogs came to visit us each and very morning and they got their breakfasts as well.
Loved the tranquility. Bird's chirping in the background. We really going to miss it all.

If you animal lover and love peace and quiet surrounding this is definitely the place to be.

Waking up to the sound of birds and the horses grazing was idyllic. My granddaughter had the time of her life. She adopted a dog called Tulip. Lol! She was so sad when we had to leave the Sunday.
All and all we had a better nice weekend and will definitely go again. A friend of mine also said that she will go there after I sent her some photos I took.
Thanks Colleen and John for a wonderful stay."

One thing comes to mind was that there was a power failure and there was John walking around making sure that everyone had a candle, matches and also made sure that the ablution block also had a candle and matches. The ablutions was always clean and because there was a gas geyser we always had hot water. When in Cape Town would stay there again. Was close to everywhere we wanted to go. "

"To be honest Cheval Vapeur wasn't exactly what we had expected but it turned out to be an awesome stay.
The kids were up early every morning to go and see and feed the horses, and then we had breakfast while looking at the mountains.
We got home every evening after a day out at the beach and had supper after the kids had spent some more time with the horses.
It's not too far from central Cape or any beach to enjoy the sea and sun.
We ended up enjoying it so much that we would recommend it to anyone.
