"We were lucky to be upgraded to the guest lodge, with more space and private amenities. On arrival however, we were a little disconcerted as to the aged state of the old farmhouse. Everything was clean and there were plenty of rooms, kitchen utensils etc, but the building needs a lot of TLC - e.g. a few leaks in the roof, some tiles missing from the walls, ceilings in disrepair. It needs modernising, and clearing up of personal paraphenalia. We did not mind the rustic feel, however it was not the 'bush getaway' that we expected.

On the positive side, Alois, the camp manager, was a true gem! He was smiling and pleasant throughout, couldn't do enough for us, and really looked after us superbly. The bush walk he took us on was excellent, and he really made the weekend a pleasure."

"Tranquil,amazing cenery."

Willie Badenhorst

"Everything was very nice, a little bit of electricity would help."

"Connecting with Nature"

Joselynne Julius

"We had a lovely stay, thank you for hosting us. A special thank you to Alios, you made us feel super welcome. "

Time seems to stand still at the camp... bird song and beautiful vistas fill your day and by night, stars and stillness. Bathroom on suite and under the blanket of bushveld sky, solar and gas powered chalets and fully equipped communal kitchen made for a perfectly restful holiday. Thanks to a very welcoming and accommodating caretaker for being so hospitable. We will be back!"

"Griffons is well worth a visit."

Peter Chivers

"We enjoyed the peace and quiet and to have various game species wandering around the chalets. It is encouraging to see the great number of Cape Vultures soaring above and around Kranskop. "

The scenery is incredible, with a view of the highest point in the Waterberg onto the Cape Griffon vulture colony. One of the highlights was a guided bush walk! We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here and recommend it to those looking for a rustic bush getaway!"

"Griffons is in a beautiful setting - feels like you're in the middle of the bush.

You can make it up there but we'd recommend a 4x4 as our saloon car struggled.

If you are staying there to visit Marakele, be aware its 9.5km of dirt road away from the National Park entrance (meaning it took us 45min each way to get there in the morning in our car - would be shorter in a 4x4). Make sure to book your Marakele Game Drives before you arrive as they book up quick and get confirmation of payment.

Wonderful staff and clean accommodation. Kitchen well equipped and we loved sitting round the fire each night with a braai and looking at the stars :) "

the camp itself was a good experience ; beds were OK ; central fire place is good to relax. All stuff you need in the central kitchen to prepare your meal are there. We did not do the walking safari as we left next day early."

Unfortunately there is a but. But somewhat neglected camp. Hardly any glasses. Only two unmatched wine glasses and what looks like two sherry glasses. Cheap and blunt cutlery. No electricity to charge a phone. A small piece of 'blitz' to light a fire. No coffee sachets, salt or other. One would have expected a little more for the price. However, the natural surrounds kind of made up for this neglect. "

"What a beautiful and peaceful place. Stunning mountain views! We both really enjoyed the piece and quiet! Thanks again to Thoma for being such a wonderful and knowledgeable host."

What an experience for two well matured ladies. Outside bathroom facilities, stars that look so close that can be pick them from the sky, no electricity just gas and solar, wonderful silence with only sounds of nature. Guided walks that will give you an insight into the environment.
Lovely eye opener over the Marakele National Park and the twilight game drive in Griffons.

Good braai and sitting around the fire.
People who seek peace and to be close to nature, feel free to consider Griffons. Nice experience. The Bekkerspas a bit rough. This can damage vehicles, but with slow pace can be overcome. Thanks Rob, Thelma and Alois.

"If you are looking for an "out of Africa experience" then Griffons Bush Camp is the place to go. Situated within the Marakele National Park, it is un-fenced but mostly protected from the big game by the mountains behind it. As avid birders we were delighted to learn about the huge breeding colony of Cape Griffon Vultures nesting high up on the cliffs of those mountains and watched in awe as the birds circled high above us protecting their nesting sites.
The stone and thatch cottages at the camp are comfortable (the king sized bed was a treat and VERY comfortable )!!! The attached bathroom facilities are fun for the outdoor types (reed walled, but open to the sky). The self-catering equipment is adequate for simple braai meals.
We were warmly welcomed by Robert and Thelma, and the camp manager Alois was more than happy to assist with any requests.
Thank you for a very enjoyable stay. "

We had an amazing time. From our busy spoiled urban life, to the incredibly beautiful, quiet, peaceful forest. The whole family enjoyed the weekend.
The outer open air bathroom for ladies was a challenge but so much fun. Foxy and the children immediately "clicked" and had so much fun. Thanks to Thoma who was a fantastic host, we have learned a great deal from him and went with so much more knowledge back home.
We will definitely return to the Griffons Bush visited Camp. It brings you back to earth and you can appreciate life just so much more.
Thanks

"Griffon's Lodge is situated below a mountain slope, part of the Waterberge and home to a large breeding colony of Cape vultures. It is a common sight to see the vultures wheeling over the cliff tops as they come in to nest and feed their young.
The Lodge consists of a main unit which is a fully equipped kitchen and verandah. 4 cottages are spread out amongst the trees. Our cottage had an outdoor gas shower and outdoor loo. The water pressure was not strong so showering was a bit of a hit and miss affair, trying to get maximum heat and maximum water was not easy!

Each cottage has its own outdoor fireplace and braai area; however as there were no other guests present, we braai'd at night around the large communal fireplace, near the verandah. Well stocked with dry wood, we built a huge fire and sat in complete privacy and isolation under the stars. The main road (gravel) is not far away and one can hear the (very) occasional vehicle but despite this, it feels superbly peaceful and restful.
The staff come in on a daily basis to clean the rooms and kitchen. This is a real pleasure as it is no holiday to be constantly doing the dishes. The staff are discreet, polite and efficient. The manager and host took us on a game drive around the property - knowledgeable and enthusiastic, he was justifiably proud of the beautiful surroundings. He is also available 24/7 and can be reached on his cellphone. The staff will not bother you if you prefer to be on your own but if you wish to go on a guided walk or drive that is easily arranged.

The Bush Camp is a 15 minute drive from Marakele Game Reserve and is fenced into the reserve. We saw antelope, zebra and baboons and the birdlife is delightful.

We would recommend this destination for people who enjoy the bush and would like tranquillity and privacy. The accommodation is not luxurious but all your needs are met. It is a short drive to the town of Thabazimbi and the Marakele National Park, so in terms of location it is well-situated."

"Griffons Bush Camp is in a beautiful setting and is a great place to relax.
The camp is run by a ranger who is very knowledgable and who went out of his way to make our stay enjoyable.
We saw bush buck, kudu, warthog and impala from our room."
