"When we planned our road trip through the Karoo over the Christmas period, we didn't consider that all restaurants and shops would be closed for the public holidays. Well this fact did not deter the hosts and owners of Four Oaks Guest House in the quaint town of Montagu from providing a wonderfully hospitable and memorable experience. On arrival we were welcomed by Wendy and Simon and their delightful little daughter, Caley-Ann.

On remarking that we didn't plan our eating arrangements very well, Simon casually reacted 'not to worry - we always look after our resident guests', to which Wendy responded that she would knock up some snacks in the courtyard followed by dinner in the restaurant (which was closed) and 'is there anything we don't eat?'.

Wendy's culinary skills were dazzling, the wine was excellent and we felt extremely privileged to share our hosts' table. (The 'Black Gold' dessert was the cherry on the top!) We thoroughly enjoyed the remainder of our two night stay and the company of our new friends. Our room was comfortable with fresh white linen, a much-needed air conditioner and the chance to laze and catch up with a movie on the flat screen TV. There was a pool for our daughter to take a splash with Caley-Ann and Route 62 was on the door step. We can highly recommend the experience and hope to create another opportunity to return to Four Oaks Guest House in the future.

"This was our first overnight stop along the garden route from Cape Town, we had had a busy time in Cape Town during our 2 day stay so it was so nice to stay at the Four Oaks as the setting was very tranquil and relaxing. The accommodation was excellent, very clean and tidy and excellent value for money. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced too. The garden area with pool was very peaceful relaxing and a good little sun trap. The pool was an absolute bonus to be able to dip in and cool off. We found the staff so friendly and nothing was too much for them. Very helpful...all in all we would definitely recommend this as a stop off on the wine route.....Excellent!"

I would highly recommend this establishment to anyone, whether you want to get away for a few days, or just passing through."

"We felt welcome as soon as we arrived. Our luggage was picked at the car, the staff were very friendly as the showed us to our room. It turned out to be nicely decorated and cosy. We were immediately asked whether we'd have dinner as we settled in which was such a relief as we were new in Montagu. The DVD collection allowed us to relax after the journey getting to Montagu. The dinner was exquisite; there was a decent variety of wine to choose from. In spite of getting up late breakfast was still available for us. The staff were very informative as to the tourist spots in Montagu. We actually stayed an extra day!!! We’ll certainly be back in Montagu to see the snow and the Four Oaks Guesthouse we'll be our first choice accommodation."

Now, although fairly pricey, under the Templeton's management it is even better. Small, friendly and comfortable, with unbeatable food and staff who have the knack of always being quietly attentive, the Four Oaks team and staff can be proud of what they have achieved. We hope to be back, and will certainly recommend the Four Oaks to anyone we know who is visiting South Africa."

"We were met after a long days driving by a very friendly member of staff and were shown to our rooms. My husband and I had a room and our teenage son and daughter each had their own rooms and we were very pleasantly surprised by the sizes of the rooms and how lovely they all were - beautifully decorated, snacks/drinks laid out for us, maps and info, plus little lavender sprigs dotted around making the room feel very welcoming. There were TV’s in each room with a selection of DVD's, and the bathrooms were all very modern and well equipped with great showers. We ate in the restaurant as we had read some very good reviews and comments on it, and we were very impressed. The food was delicious, had one of the best steaks ever, and everything was beautifully presented. After a very comfortable night sleep, breakfast was also delicious and although our son was unwell with a bug he had picked up earlier on our travels, the staff at Four Oaks made a breakfast up for him to take to his room. All in all we had a thoroughly enjoyable stay, were well looked after, and would not hesitate in returning in the future and recommending this lovely find to our friends and family."

"A warm welcome and a beautiful establishment. We were only sorry that the restaurant was closed on Sundays and we hadn't been told. But we found a very good alternative!"
