"We used Rooms4Africa to book (as a few times in the past) and we were not disappointed.
When we stopped in front of the hotel, I must be honest - I was not very impressed! The hotel is very old and I did not like the area! There are a lot of nightclubs etc. in that street and it was a bit noisy (we arrived there at 7 o'clock in the evening).

Inside though it is very clean and the person helping us at the front counter was very friendly and helpful. When we arrived at our room I was very happy. The room was very welcoming and very clean. I am very fussy when it comes to bedding, but the bedding was spotless and smelled wonderful - a little like home!

"Friendly, helpful staff"

(South Africa) Ms Keller

"From our arrival to departure, the staff were friendly, helpful and went out of their way to ensure that our stay was pleasant.

The rooms are clean and comfortable and the location of the hotel is perfect for anyone who would like to be in the heart of Grahamstown."

"Pleasant stay"

(Netherlands) Mr Pikaar

"We had a pleasant stay at this old establishment, better known in Grahamstown as the old Vic (popular student house and pub). Good room, good service, good breakfast, clean swimming pool, though everything looks a bit old.

"Booking for my first stay in Grahamstown was unknown as I'd never been there before, but wanted somewhere central to Rhodes University as I was taking my son down for 'O' week. The Victoria Mews must be one of the only establishments where you can get a single room without the hefty premium of being one person!

Centrally located to all amenities, the hotel is off the street and you're welcomed by the friendly Dumisani who I saw multi-tasking all week-end to provide tip top service to guests, as well as counselling anxious parents worried that their offspring may party too much and not work enough! He'd obviously seen it all from previous years. Orientation, Festival and Graduation weeks in the sleepy town of Grahamstown are three periods when the town bustles with guests and activity, so advance booking is essential during these times. As two young girls found out, when footsore from trekking from one establishment to another, looking for a room for the night. Fortuitously, a cancellation came through just as they were about to leave the cool reception area for the baking heat of the street, and I later saw them having cocktails and frolicking in the sparkling pool on my way to Gino's - a family restaurant attached to the hotel.

My single en suite room was quaint and squeaky clean, furnished with lovely old pieces likening it to 'granny's spare room' and serviced daily by friendly housekeeping staff, armed with fresh towels, coffee, tea and bottled water.

A wall fan rendered it a cool oasis from the late January Eastern Cape heat. Comfy chairs lined the veranda corridor where you can relax after the daily admin of registration and signing up with doctors, chemists and the bookshop. The hustle and bustle of the street washes over you like moving wallpaper, as you bask in the afternoon sun, or just sit and sip an ice cold sundowner.

The hotel has two restaurants - Gino's and the more elegant Henry Ate, a steak house with cocktail bar (closed for renovations during my stay). One can not help but enjoy the friendly atmosphere of Gino's, where eating alone is not lonely, as conversations are struck with neighbouring tables, and familiar faces from university registration filter in. The penne Ariabiata was the best I've had in a long time (usually not hot enough for my liking, this had just enough chilli in it). I also had the succulent pork chops on one of the nights - lean and tasty with a barbeque sauce.

Breakfast is included and served in Gino's by friendly staff. If you're leaving early, a packed breakfast is offered.

I foresee a few trips to Grahamstown in the next three years, hopefully culminating in 'grad' week, but hope to make the Vic my home from home during this time!

"An excellent hotel that made our daughter's graduation all that more of an occasion. Rooms are delightful, staff is great and go that extra mile all of the time to make you feel welcome. Initially I was not happy with the rate we where being charged but had no option as we needed a place to stay. We drove from Swaziland - yes - 14 hours solid and so you can imagine my delight when I saw how lovely, comfortable and spacious the room was. The big comfortable bed was just what I needed after that long drive -- and furthermore, the breakfast was just what we needed before we hit the road again for the return trip!"

"Convenient Central Location"

A real plus point for us was that there were two restaurants on site, though one was closed for refurbishment when we were there. We have no hesitation in recommending this small hotel."
