We saw up close every large and small animal we only hoped we might see when we decided to make the trip. By the time we left the park around five thirty, we could hardly wait to return the next mourning for our guided tour. When we arrived at the lodge we were warmly greeted by our host. Mike could not believe our good fortune that afternoon especially when he learned we saw wild dogs, the rarest animal sighting in the park. After our tales were told, we were escorted to our rooms. They were comfortable and well appointed. Everything was new. We were very pleased to say the least. After we settled in, we returned to the main room in the lodge. While a spacious room, this area is warm and comfortable . You can set around a large coffee table,sip some marvelous South African wine, and talk with fellow guests about your day in the park ,the uniqueness and natural beauty of South Africa,or the upcoming rugby match. Dinner that night was prepared by the best chef in South Africa. I can say without worry of contradiction that his onion soup is the best in the world. We eat dinner on the deck immediately outside the main room. That night at dinner we were joined by fellow guests including members of Mike's family who were spending that night at the lodge . Our food and dinner conversation made us feel as if we had been invited to a family dinner. What a wonderful time we had. We went to bed right afterward so that we could arise in time to meet our guide at five thirty the next morning. "

Heinrich made our trip even more memorable, on the daily game drives, with his expert knowledge of the bush and animals, and as a result was able to offer us great sightings of the elusive 'big five' and many more.

Some of the highlights include, the excellent English breakfasts offered to those guests who do not leave for the Kruger park at 5:00am and the first class evening meals served on the back deck where one can enjoy the many animals which pass through on their evening rounds such as zebra, impala and the resident warthogs.

In addition, we spent three unforgetable days in the

Kruger park with Cliff the ranger. Cliff showed us around the park, cooked us a great breakfast and provided us with the answers to our plethora of questions regarding the parks inhabitants and the ecology of the area.

"Needles Lodge is a beautiful and well situated location for visiting Kruger and the surrounding areas. Mike (the owner) is an excellent and convivial host and nothing is too much trouble to ensure that guests needs are fully catered for. Kids really are welcome (ours are 12 and 10 years old) and are made to feel every bit as important as the adults. The food - cooked by Washington is superb and is complimented by the service provided by his aides Akim and Victor.

One of the nicest aspects of our stay was the communal lounge area where all guests (there are six double rooms) can share a drink and their experiences as they unwind each night.

If you are taking the safari in Kruger you should strongly consider using an experienced guide. We found Cliff Butlin (who you can book through Mike) both excellent and knowledgeable, and very good with children. Although seeing one or more of the 'big five' is not guaranteed we felt that Cliff's network helped us to see them all close up as well as many other of the park's wildlife.

Overall a really good experience and one I would recommend."

"This was our 2nd visit to Needles and the service and welcome was just as great as the first time round. Mike is very freindly, the food is scrummy, the rooms are large and comfortable and the location is perfect. We took a game drive with Cliff and saw the big 5 which is a must for everyone. Do yourself a favour, book this lodge and you will not be disappointed."

The house is very comfortable and I loved the deck outside, where you can also see many animals in the bush. The staff provides excellent service and the food and drink was excellent as well. This was one of my all-time best holiday experiences, with all-day guided drives in Kruger park. In the evenings, we swapped stories and relaxed with some good drinks and a great family-style dinner. The value was excellent and I will recommend Needles Lodge to all of my friends for any stay in the area. Thanks Mike for the wonderful hospitality! I can't wait to go back!"
