On the far northern border of South Africa lies a beautiful area known as the Great Marico and it is in this spectacular setting, in Malaria free Madikwe Game Reserve, that Tau Game Lodge is situated. The jumbled hillocks of Tshwene-Tshwene and the dramatic ridge of the Dwarsberg Mountains expose rocks of up to 2630 million years old and artefacts of the Stone and Iron Ages are still found in the Great Marico dust.

Privately owned Tau Game Lodge was built in 1995 and overlooks a vast natural waterhole, which attracts a variety of game, as does the diverse vegetation which thrives in the fertile topsoil. The lodge was designed to reflect the natural surroundings and makes use of the natural resources wherever possible.

The main body of the Lodge is two-leveled and has a comfortable lounge, conference facilities, bar and dining-room which are semi open-air and overlook the waterhole.
The lodge is decorated with unusual African artefacts, masks and large rugs are decorating the high-ceilinged foyer and vivid animal-print fabrics brighten the settees in the upside bar. Delicious buffet breakfasts and lunches are generally served in the main building or on the veranda next to the plunge pool and dinner is served in a cosy boma under the stars. The décor and furnishings are Africa-inspired and the rooms are equipped with both air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Thirty rustic thatched chalets are spread out in U-formation on either side of the lodge, offering excellent views of animals approaching the water from the opposite bank. Each chalet has its own wooden deck, which allows one to experience the bush in privacy and is equipped with an ensuite bathroom and open-air shower. Child policy: For children younger than 3 we offer babysitting facilities, while the Tau Cubz Club caters for children aged between 3 - 5. Cubz get their own back pack with goodies and a T-shirt and will go on separate shorter safaris. Please enquire about rates for children between 3 - 5 years. Children aged 6 and up are allowed on the adult safaris, but can also participate in the Cubz program.

Adult rates are inclusive of: Accommodation, three meals daily, 2 game drives per day in open landrovers guided by experienced Rangers, includes sundowner drink. If scheduled flights are booked through Tau – then Airstrip Transfers are included. Rates are exclusive of: Conservation Levy on entry (please enquire for rate). Government / bed levy (please enquire about rate), transfers to and from the lodge, telephone/internet Use, curio and bar purchases, spa facilities, gratuities and laundry.

* The Rhino Conservation levy payments will be utilised for anti-poaching and general conservation initiatives and will be charged per adult per night and per child (2-12 years).

"I have never been to Tau before but had heard some great things from friends and colleagues. I had been looking for something a bit more elderly friendly as my parents are in their eighties, there are pathways all around Tau which helps with mobility and it is a level area with minimal steps. They even assisted us with a wheel chair. The staff were also excellent and assisted us where ever they could. From helping my parents in and out of the ranger’s trucks to making sure all pre drive drinks and snacks were on the lower level of the main lodges viewing platform to the water hole.
We were also upgraded to a family room so that my sister would be able to assist my parents at no extra cost.
The chef even cooked a special dinner for my Mum.
The lodges themselves are nicely situated around a water hole.
All in all we had a lovely time saw loads of game and were looked after extremely well.
The staff I would rate as excellent.
