As it was a very cold night with snow on the surrounding mountains it was nice to have warm blankets on the beds. After a good night sleep we were welcomed very friendly in the breakfast area. Also there everything was neat and tidy and very well displayed and the food was delicious.

The food at the restaurant was delicious and we thought that the service was good also. De Oude Meul Country Lodge is set in a fascinating and peaceful valley. The buck on the farm added a point of interest, as did the ostriches in the adjoining fields.

"Arriving at a road bend in a small valley with the rocks towering around, it seemed improbable that an oasis of heavenly living that is De Oude Meul Country Lodge could await one. But it does, and we were welcomed at the moment of arrival as if family, and with humour and a display of obvious enjoyment at working at this place. It may be that there were few guests registered during our visit (early in the season), but the personal touch was so evident that I suspect it applies even when a coach load of guests arrive (as they had the previous day it seemed). Our room was spotless, spacious, and from a window one could watch Sprinkbok and other animals small and large grazing in the nearby meadow. A short walk before dark through the grounds and beyond along the roadside and nearby fields, revealed wonderful flowers, both cultivated and wild (it was spring) and bird life, with the stream and weeping willows (some lit by night) adding to the splendour of the whole area.

We had been advised of the merits of the restaurant near the entrance and duly were rewarded with a lovely meal, and not forgetting the close encounter with the antiquity that is the old mill machinery of course. Not so sure that ostrich AND sprinbok together is what purists would expect each of us to have as a main course. However, with time for only one dinner before we continued our 2-week whistle stop tour of South Africa, it seemed the best way for both of us to sample both delicacies was to share the meat content of each separate menu dish (among others also on offer).

Over an equally enjoyable breakfast the next morning we met the owner who took time to highlight the history of the Mill (from the 1750's) and where his grandfather had lived, and where he was born. He then prepared hand drawings for two short diversionary journeys off Route 62 on our meander towards Montagu , Worcester, Paarl and Cape Town. Each detour offered quite spectacular scenery to rival and indeed surpass any seen throughout our journey, leaving us with magical memories of an all-to-short stay at and in the vicinity of De Oude Muel. One night cannot do justice to the venue nor to enjoy the breathtaking countryside and rock formations that abound in the area.
