"The small rondavels were clean and comfortable - set in a beautiful, lush garden on a citrus farm. There was a small fridge in the room but no facilities for self catering, however the staff were more than willing to meet our needs when we asked for plates and cutlery etc. There was a restaurant facility but we did not use this so I cannot comment on the food. It was a perfect overnight stop before heading into the Kruger the following day."

"My wife and I so enjoyed the three nights spent at Blue Cottages recently. The staff were so obliging and friendly and nothing was too much trouble. We found Owen exceptionally proficient in his job as the Manager and Mac the chef went the extra mile to cook us a great 'sheshebo' meal."

The standard is not luxury but everything works: a/c, wifi on the veranda, clean swimming pool. Dinner is served in a romantic arbor, ok, but but not gourmet. But you get a lot for the overall low price. We had a lovely breakfast at the Monsoon Gallery before we left for Pretoria.

"Nice location on the way from Kruger to Blye Canyon. We had a very friendly welcome and a cute cottage. Dinner was luckily offered to us and we said yes due to no other chances in the area. Unfortunately, we were then not asked again about the contents of dinner and just got the whole three-course menu with starter, main course and dessert. The price was fine with R160 per person. Also without telling the price, we paid R25 for going online for only 10 minutes. Overall, a nice location but there should be more communication regarding prices. Just to keep it fair."

"Fantastic experience"

Thank you!"

"Blue cottages is a great launch pad for the Panorama route-- but don't stay there if you need easy access to anything like wi-fi, ATM, dinner restaurant, shopping, etc. It's quiet and secluded and the environment is lovely. Hosts are very attentive and helpful. A cottage for two singles is a bit cramped for two people with luggage, and there is no AC. The effect of the sluggish one-speed fan for sleeping seems to be negated by the mosquito net. "

"We found this a thoroughly relaxing and lovely stay after our long drive from Jo'burg. Maria and Pieter could not have been more welcoming - and the 3-course dinner by lamplight on the verandah of the farmhouse was truly delicious - and atmospheric !

Breakfast (the 'healthy option') was a refreshing and large freshly-prepared fruit salad, followed by warm home-made bread and jam.

We stayed in the en suite twin-bedded Quail Cottage - which was beautifully furnished and very comfortable indeed. Our choice is always character rather than high luxury (and 'anonymity' of hotels) - and we were not disappointed.

Our hosts were so friendly and helpful from the moment we arrived offering us refreshments and food options for dinner and breakfast (which were delicious) to giving us advice on the local area.
The local is great it’s not far from Hoedspruit, Kruger and the mountains with easy access to attractions like Jessica the hippo, Moholoholo rehab centre and Blyde canyon. The blue cottage is set in the mango groves and feels safe yet relaxed.
Overall we would recommend this as its great value for money and the service was impeccable.

"Blue Cottages
It is a long drive from Johannesburg to the northern camps of the Kruger Park, so we looked on the Internet for a homely overnight stop in the Hoedspruit area. The name ‘Blue Cottages’ hooked us in and we booked on line.
The sign is well marked on the R527 and about 20 minutes or so after the Abel Erasmus tunnel. We spotted the turnoff easily and found ourselves driving through the middle of a citrus orchard, the trees laden with ripening fruit. The plantation gave way to a shady oasis of flamboyant trees, under-planted with verdant lawns and lush tropical plants and through waving bamboo palms fronds, we saw a group of white rondavels with bright blue stable doors, and knew we had arrived.
Tony & Tertia, our genteel hosts, welcomed us warmly and ushered us to ‘Crane Cottage’, where we would spend the night. The interior walls of the garden cottage are pale French blue (of course,) and a shower and loo have been added on for convenience, making this comfortable spot all one could wish for, for a night or so. Twin beds with crisp white sheets and embroidered duvet covers await the weary traveller and fluffy white towels are folded neatly to one side, and we found plenty of hot water on tap later on. Grass mats cover the floor and a dinky old fashioned wardrobe and dressing table complete the homely feel of a cosy countryside get away. TV is provided in each rondavel, should you wish it.
Tony & Tertia also run Mad Dogz, a 3 star restaurant on the road as you turn into Blue Cottages, but as we had stopped earlier for a meal, unfortunately we would not be eating there this time and instead, we opted for a light snack of our own from our trusty cooler box. Tertia shows us a delightful little garden nook surrounded by tropical plants where we can enjoy our snack and she had laid a table for 2 with brightly coloured woven placemats and matching serviettes. Sipping a sundowner in this enchanted garden and enjoying the warmth of a low veld evening, just a stone’s throw from majestic Swadini and Blyde River Canyon, was most soothing. As dusk deepened, hurricane lamps were lit in the garden and a nearby wind chime, just one of many in this lovely garden, began to tinkle softly in the evening breeze.
We retired early and after a restful night’s sleep, in very comfortable beds and cosy surroundings, we awoke at dawn to the sounds of birdsong of every kind and pitch - oriole, the ubiquitous sun birds, robins, green parrots and a the liquid notes of Burchel’s coucal. The sun crept under the blue stable door and soon we were up and dressed and enjoying Tertia’s delicious full house breakfast, served once again in the charming garden nook under the branches of their ancient giant rubber tree, which stretches its massive branches across all and dwarfs the cottages.
Before starting our trip again, we popped in to see the restaurant and adjacent gift shop, which is part of the Blue Cottages establishment. The shop is stocked with unusual local and other African crafts, colourful bright skirts and t-shirts and other covetable items, and we vow to return at a later date, to have a longer look. The cosy restaurant also calls for a future visit and we marvel at the Goliath remains of lead wood trees, which must have taken at least a yolk of oxen to manoeuvre into place, and which are now here to support the patio roof.
We won’t hesitate to book again at this charming place in the future and we will also recommend it to our friends. Blue Cottages has just become our favourite ‘room for the night’ destination.
"

The kitchen was adequate, and I enjoyed the gas stove. The TV was utilised to watch the test cricket - a must over summer!

Since the establishment is inside a compound, it felt very secure...the grounds were extensive and conducive to strolling around.

Breakfast choices were great. We opted for the healthy breakfast, but could have had a full-blown meal instead. We had dinner there, which was very convenient. However, we didn't have a choice and being a vegetarian, left me hungry. I could have let them know ahead regarding this issue, but we didn't realize we would be arriving so late in the day.
We would definitely stay there again...a good value in a lovely setting.
