The hosts are such lovely people who really do a lot to make their guests comfortable. They really give the lodge its homely feel. All the staff is very friendly and the food is delicious. You can book nice excursions or go out on your one, with both your hosts will offer help and information if wanted. There is a lot of wildlife surrounding the lodge and they regularly come right op to the lodge, it's super. Next time we come to Africa we will certainly stay here again."

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Needles Lodge primarily because the host Dennis was so co-operative. We were a family of nine people with difficult dietary requirements - one of the party being strictly kosher, some only eating kosher meat and one vegetarian who only eats free range eggs and does not eat dairy. Denis ensured that all these requirements were met even going so far as to purchase kosher meat from Johannesburg and the food was always tasty. The lodge is lovely with animals like Kudu and wart hog coming right into the grounds."

"Great stay"

(South Africa) Gerko van den Berg | 22 May 2012

"A very pleasant lodge with great hospitality. Wildlife plentiful inside the reserve and interaction with kudu and zebra was a nice surprise. Very well situated between Malelane and Crocodile bridge entrances to Kruger National Park."

"My family & I ( 6 adults & 1 child) have just returned from a 5 night stay at Needles Lodge. We were treated like family by the owners, Gary & Alta, who went out of their way to accommodate us & to make our stay a memorable one. Nothing was too much trouble for them - their hospitality was outstanding & the quality of the meals prepared by Alta & her staff earned nothing less than a 5-star rating. We saw numerous game inside the Kruger Park as well as around the lodge itself.

I have no hesitation in recommending this lodge to anyone."

"Needles Lodge"

(South Africa) Neville stocks | 2 October 2009

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay. Gary and Alta Barltrop were excellent, friendly and attentive hosts. The Lodge is beautifully appointed in a bush environment with close contact with wild animals and birds. It is a good base for the Crocodile Bridge and Malelane gates to the Kruger national Park."

"Wow, what a lovely lodge"

(South Africa) Randy Mavunda | 31 March 2009

"We stayed there for two days and we will definitely be coming back again. The hosts are very friendly and the small size of the lodge makes one feel like members of the family. The food is great. Enjoyed having breakfast with the warthogs, an experience every one should really cherish."

"Nice place. "

(Belgium) Erik Van Geel | 1 December 2008

"The tour guide for the Kruger park was also a professional. If we go back to this area in SA we will try to stay again at Needles lodge."

It literally is a home-away-from-home. Mike is a fantastic host, always ensuring we were comfortable, giving us advice on what was around, getting strangers talking late into the night around a fantastic 3 course meal every night. Vusi, the chef, is brilliant, and you might even get the chance to feed the zebra that roam Marloth Park some bread at night.

I would do more than recommend Needles Lodge to anyone looking for an affordable place to stay in Mpumalanga...I'd insist they check it out."

"Our stay at the lodge, coupled with our two days in Kruger Park, was the highlight of our two week trip to South Africa. Before we even got to the Lodge, our host Mike suggested we drive thru the park for a few hours in the afternoon. We took a self guided tour, and we were richly reward. We saw up close every large and small animal we only hoped we might see when we decided to make the trip. By the time we left the park around five thirty, we could hardly wait to return the next mourning for our guided tour. When we arrived at the lodge we were warmly greeted by our host. Mike could not believe our good fortune that afternoon especially when he learned we saw wild dogs, the rarest animal sighting in the park. After our tales were told, we were escorted to our rooms. They were comfortable and well appointed. Everything was new. We were very pleased to say the least. After we settled in, we returned to the main room in the lodge. While a spacious room, this area is warm and comfortable . You can set around a large coffee table, sip some marvelous South African wine, and talk with fellow guests about your day in the park ,the uniqueness and natural beauty of South Africa,or the upcoming rugby match. Dinner that night was prepared by the best chef in South Africa. I can say without worry of contradiction that his onion soup is the best in the world. We eat dinner on the deck immediately outside the main room. That night at dinner we were joined by fellow guests including members of Mike's family who were spending that night at the lodge . Our food and dinner conversation made us feel as if we had been invited to a family dinner. What a wonderful time we had. We went to bed right afterward so that we could arise in time to meet our guide at five thirty the next morning. "

The guides (Simon and Cliff) provided comprehensive information and a great sense of fun and enjoyment. The communal dining and lounge areas are great for sharing experiences of safari and day trips but may not suit those who are hoping for their own 'space'. "This was a first visit to South Africa (Africa) for my Indonesian partner and what better place to introduce her to the African bush than Needles Lodge.

Mike is a gracious host and runs a tight ship. Vusi and Patricia are stars in the kitchen and catered for our every gastronomic wish. Heinrich made our trip even more memorable, on the daily game drives, with his expert knowledge of the bush and animals, and as a result was able to offer us great sightings of the elusive 'big five' and many more.

The accommodation at the lodge is well appointed with excellent amenities.

My Indonesian partner summed it up well by saying that it felt like a home away from home and has not stopped babbling on about the great experience she had.

Mike, to you and your capable crew, once again many thanks, keep up the good work."

Washington cooked wonderful meals every single night. My daughter has special diet needs and he was willing to accommodate her every time. Thandie and Patricia were very sweet and nice.

The rooms are beautiful, not too luxurious but very tastefully decorated, exactly what we like.

At dinnertime the fact that you sit at the table with the other guests makes it a perfect opportunity to meet other people and for good conversation while you sip a wonderful South African wine.

We couldn't have been happier with the place. My kids loved it.

The 2-day safari at Kruger was fantastic. We saw tons of animals on the first day. Cliff, our young guide was the best. Knowledgeable and funny, he knew all the corners of the park and was very sweet with our children.

What can we say? We would go back to Needles in a pinch. It made our vacation in SA even more special.

Thanks Mike!!"

Although I enjoyed Cape Town very much our 3 day safari was undoubtedly the highlight of our trip. Mike was a very hospitable host and the food and accommodation were first class and the staff were most helpful and attentive. Special mention should be made of Cliff our guide who managed to find every animal we could have hoped to see, with the exception of lions, who proved too elusive. We were spoilt in having Cliff almost to ourselves during our 3 day stay and it was an unforgettable experience for us city dwellers from England. They say you always want to return to the bush and I can endorse that sentiment.I would be delighted to return to Needles and have every intention of doing just that at some future date."

Some of the highlights include, the excellent English breakfasts offered to those guests who do not leave for the Kruger park at 5:00am and the first class evening meals served on the back deck where one can enjoy the many animals which pass through on their evening rounds such as zebra, impala and the resident warthogs.

In addition, we spent three unforgetable days in the

Kruger park with Cliff the ranger. Cliff showed us around the park, cooked us a great breakfast and provided us with the answers to our plethora of questions regarding the parks inhabitants and the ecology of the area.

Our trip to Needles and the Kruger was the experience of a lifetime and we hope to return soon!"

"Needles Lodge is a beautiful and well situated location for visiting Kruger and the surrounding areas. Mike (the owner) is an excellent and convivial host and nothing is too much trouble to ensure that guests needs are fully catered for. Kids really are welcome (ours are 12 and 10 years old) and are made to feel every bit as important as the adults. The food - cooked by Washington is superb and is complimented by the service provided by his aides Akim and Victor.

One of the nicest aspects of our stay was the communal lounge area where all guests (there are six double rooms) can share a drink and their experiences as they unwind each night.

If you are taking the safari in Kruger you should strongly consider using an experienced guide. We found Cliff Butlin (who you can book through Mike) both excellent and knowledgeable, and very good with children. Although seeing one or more of the 'big five' is not guaranteed we felt that Cliff's network helped us to see them all close up as well as many other of the park's wildlife.

Overall a really good experience and one I would recommend."

Dinners were delicious (thanks Washington and Akim) and we loved the great Chardonnay. We were lucky to spot the big 5 thanks to a young but experienced ranger (Thanks Cliff). "

"Yes we generally enjoyed ourselves, however on reflection there were a coule of things which I think may improve the lodge. It would have been nice to make your own tea coffee rather than ask. Also a toilet door for us more uptight people.

Thanks to Cliff for a wonderfull 2 day safari. more

"I stayed at Needles Lodge in Marloth Park, at the Southern end of Kruger Park, the week of October 10th and had such a great time! The house is very comfortable and I loved the deck outside, where you can also see many animals in the bush. The staff provides excellent service and the food and drink was excellent as well. This was one of my all-time best holiday experiences, with all-day guided drives in Kruger park. In the evenings, we swapped stories and relaxed with some good drinks and a great family-style dinner. The value was excellent and I will recommend Needles Lodge to all of my friends for any stay in the area. Thanks Mike for the wonderful hospitality! I can't wait to go back!"
