Grahamstown National Arts Festival
Grahamstown
The annual Grahamstown National Arts Festival is one of the most established and long-standing festivals on the arts calendar, and every year thousands of people flock to the historic university town of Grahamstown to perform, participate, watch and soak up the wonderful atmosphere. The festival is so large that it is considered the second largest arts festival in the world after the Edinburgh Arts Festival.
Taking place over a number of days, the event will see some 50 000 people descending on Grahamstown to take in acts ranging from dance to jazz, comedy to opera and cabaret. The festival aims to showcase the best of the arts including both local and international artists coming to take part in this celebration of creativity.
Galleries are filled with a variety of art exhibitions, and the streets and parks are filled with food markets, craft fairs, buskers and a range of wonderful goods from jewellery to textiles. Approximately 50 venues throughout the town are used for productions and performances, with the biggest venue being the 1820 Settlers National Monument.
